Comenzó cantando en la calle, en pubs y cafés nocturnos, pero le llegó la fama mundial en 1988, cuando recibió cuatro Grammys por su primer disco, que incluía Fast Car, su primer gran éxito. Políticamente de izquierda, rechazó participar en el Live 8 por considerar que esos eventos son inútiles. Sus letras tienen una mezcla de drama personal y política que la emparientan con Silvio Rodríguez. En Talking... Tracy demuestra que sabe leer más allá de la superficie y captar la bronca y la esperanza que anidan en el proletariado norteamericano, el más embrutecido, el más sojuzgado. Aun aquellos que parecen dar lástima, aun aquellos que parecen pedir limosna pueden estar hablando de revolución...
